Dear Parents / Carers                  Thursday July 12th.

The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you as informed as possible about the last few weeks of term

The situation at school (continued)

As I write this newsletter (Thursday morning) we are still waiting for the mobile to be jet-cleaned underneath and disinfected inside.

As stated in the last newsletter no flood water actually got inside so it is more the outside by the drains and the underneath that needs treatment. The proposed day is this Friday but as yet I don’t know if it will be ready for Monday. So it’s still watch this space I’m afraid!!

CANCELLED

We have had to cancel Sports Day , Races Day and the FOBS Summer Fair. We were hoping to re-arrange these events but that depended upon the field being in a fit state to be used. Even though the water levels have gone down; the sewerage drains cleaned and there being no evidence of sewerage on the field except some traces around the back of the mobile due to be cleaned this week (see above) the best information I can get is from an official East Riding / Hull advice about floods and health booklet that states: -

‘Do not let children play in flood water or areas that have been contaminated until these areas have been cleaned and exposed to sunlight. Sunlight will kill harmful bacteria, rendering them safe in about a week or so.’

An expert from the East Riding said to me yesterday after inspecting the field ‘There is very little risk under these circumstances.’

It seems to me that any risk however small is not worth taking and it would be much better for our children not to use the field until after the summer holidays.

Obviously that is disappointing for the children but health and safety come first. We are trying to organise some sporting activities in the final week – eg. Netball/Basketball tournaments and the FOBs committee have discussed holding the Fair early in the Autumn term combined with some sort of special sports activities.

FOBs Disco is this Friday July 13th. 6.00-7.15  KS1 / 7.30 –9.00 KS2

FOBs Summer Raffle (see FOBs separate notice for more details) is taking place next week

Consolidation / Extension meeting July 9th.

52 parents/carers
14 governors / all teaching staff / 3 support staff
Brian Beilby (Local Authority Consultant)
Norman Anderson (Special Needs Consultant)
Angela Jones (Early Years Curriculum Project Manager)
all attended the meeting last Monday.

Overall it was a very positive meeting where the Consolidation/Extension model and the background to why we as Governors choose that model was explained.

A booklet containing some possible frequently asked questions was prepared. These have also been sent out to parents who originally indicated they were able to attend but didn’t make it. If you haven’t seen one of these booklets then please ask at the office or e-mail:- burstwickcommunity.primary@eastriding.gov.uk

Some of the major concerns raised by parents were:-

Will my child be taught the same work he/she has already done?

Absolutely not!  Every class teacher plans carefully ensuring that each individual child’s work is set at the appropriate level for them. Whole school theme /topic planning ensures that children learn the skills they need and don’t repeat modules of work.

If my child is making progress will they have to wait two terms to move into another class?

If the evidence is clear that they have made sufficient, sustained progress before Easter and it would benefit them, we would move them into the appropriate class group as soon as we think they are ready.

What about friendship patterns if my child isn’t going to be in the same class as their friends?

BCPS has a ‘family’ ethos. Children can mix with other age groups in the playground; sit with each other at dinnertime and so on. It should actually widen their friendship groups rather than restrict them.

Yes, but what if a child is cruel and calls them names or teases them?

It is our job (and yours as parents if necessary) to educate the children in this area. The whole school has now had the situation explained to them, as to why the classes are being organised in this way for next year and how they are expected to behave. They have been introduced to a character from a story called Boris the Boaster who always tells everybody how much better than anyone else he is. He will be continually referred to, particularly now and at the beginning of the Autumn term. The children have been told that we are operating a  Zero tolerance approach from all adults connected to the school.

One parent suggested that the classes should have names rather than be called R/Y1 and so on.

At the meeting the majority thought that was an excellent idea so  I worked with the School Council this week and set them the task of coming up with possible categories. We then took them to all the children and they voted. The winning category was planets – so the classes will be known as:-

R/Y1 Neptune

Y1/Y2  Mercury

Y2/Y3 Saturn

Y3/4 Mars

Y5 Venus

Y6 Jupiter
