Card System

Yellow cards

Red cards

We have been operating our card system for over two years now.

AIM? To encourage all children to successfully meet our

GOLDEN RULES

  • We are kind and care about each other.
  • We speak and behave politely at all times.
  • We look after our school and everything in it.
  • We do what we are told to do by any adults who are looking after us.
  • We work hard and let everyone else work hard.
  • We welcome visitors.
  • We arrive for school prepared to work with all the equipment we need.

Question: How does the card system affect the children’s’ abilities to be able to achieve this?

The Green Cards encourage them by rewarding them for their good behaviour and efforts……they can receive them for a number of reasons from any adult in the school.

All the green cards were separated into class groups in our Special Green Card Assembly once every half term and two lucky winners are drawn out from each year group. They win sports equipment/art materials/games or books donated by FOBs. (The original idea was one single prize for one lucky winner but our School Council decided each class should have winners).

Yellow Cards are WARNING Cards. Once given to a child if they alter their behaviour in that session then nothing else happens.

Red Cards are given if a child fails to recognise that their behaviour is affecting their work or that of the children around them. They are then sent to another place of work.

The vast majority of children who receive yellow cards understand what they have done wrong and adapt their behaviour immediately.

Each teacher records who has been given yellow cards; not to share with the children, but to look for patterns of behaviour eg. which sessions are most given out/what was the activity taking place/is it the same children and so on.

RED CARDS are recorded and parents contacted when three in a half term have been received (a very rare occurrence). Discussions are then undertaken with the parents and strategies are put in place to help moderate the child’s behaviour in a positive way.

We also have a whole class Green Card half termly competition where the winning class gets to choose a special treat. So far we have had:- Reception bringing their bikes for a day; Year 3 bringing teddies and toys for a day; Year watching a video...
