SESSION TIMES

Morning - 9.00 a.m. - 12.00 noon

Afternoon - 1.00 p.m. - 3.30 p.m.

Doors are open at 8.50 a.m. to allow children to be in school and ready to start work at 9.00 a.m.

CURRICULUM

We take children from 4 - 11 years old, thus ensuring continuity throughout the early years of education.

At present there are 151 children on roll divided by age into 6 classes in the Autumn / Spring terms and 7 classes in the summer term.(The consolidation/extension model) See enclosed newsletter July 2007

We buy in support  from the Learning Support Service.  They offer small group, or individual work to children identified as having Special Needs.

We strive to ensure that all our children have access to a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum which meets individual needs withing the framework of The National Curriculum.

Our work is organised around a two year ( Key stage 1 ) and a four year ( Key Stage 2 ) cycle of work.  All units of work are planned to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. There is an increasing partnership being developed with business, particularly BP and classes visit to see and experience the real world of work.  These visits are planned carefully into our Medium Term plans.

Y5 and Y6 pupils have access to a residential visit every year.

Class teachers are responsible for ensuring that the work units meet the needs of individual children within their teaching groups.  A variety of different approaches are employed to deliver the curriculum.  Class teaching, small group or individual teaching is used depending on the most effective and efficient method appropriate to the subject and the needs of the children.

Our reading books are colour coded throughout the school allowing children choice and depth at each stage. We use a variety of methods when teaching reading, a mixture of whole word and phonics.

Pupil achievement is reported to parents at parents evenings each term and by written reports at the end of each academic year. Individual progress is discussed at other times as appropriate.  Consultation evenings involving both the parents and the child will be continued this school year.

Sex Education is taught within the general framework of health education with specific programmes of work for Y5 and Y6.Top of

The time spent on teaching is 22 hours 55 minutes.

VISITS TO THE SCHOOL

CURRICULUM MEETINGS

In order for parents to be as fully involved in their child’s education as possible we hold Curriculum meetings when the need arises.

CONSULTATION NIGHTS

At the Autumn consultation night the teaching staff will discuss each child’s target(s) for the term with the parent(s)/carer(s). Strategies will be suggested and agreed. The targets will then be talked through with the child during school time, signed by all parties and sent home to be carried out and evaluated.

The Spring consultation will involve the children being invited with their parent(s)/carer(s) to discuss their previous target(s) and to agree on new ones.

The meeting in the Summer term will be an Exhibition of work evening where you and your child(ren) are free to walk around the school and visit all classes to see the work the other children in the school have done.

Reports with targets are sent out once a year.

We welcome visits to the school. Please call to make an appointment so that Mr. Scarlett or Mr Baker is available to show you around.

SCHOOL POLICIES

All school policies are available for parents to read, in the school office, as are minutes of all Governors’ meetings

ADMISSIONS POLICY

We operate an Early Admissions Policy. Children are offered places at the school at the beginning of the academic year in which they are 5 years old.

We aim to make starting school as easy as we can as we wish your child to be as happy as possible from the beginning.

We hope the following information will help smooth the transition from home to school.Top of
page

STARTING SCHOOL

MORNING:

School starts at 9.00 a.m. and you are asked to make sure your child is in school by this time. Doors open at 8.50 a.m.

Please bring your child into the cloakroom where you will be greeted by a member of staff.

Children will each have a coat peg with their name on it.

Gradually encourage your child to come into the cloakroom by themselves. Unfortunately there is not enough room for every infant and parents to be in at the same time!  We aim to encourage the children to become as independent as possible as soon as possible.

AFTERNOON:

School finishes at 3.30 p.m.

When collecting your child please wait in the playground where your child can see you from the classroom window.

Please note:

No child is allowed to leave the classroom until a parent is in the playground to collect them.

If for some reason you will not be collecting your child yourself please inform a member of staff of the name of the person who will be meeting your child. Please ask the adult to make themselves known to the staff.

If for any reason you have been held up unexpectedly, kindly ring the school as soon as you can. We will take care of your child until you arrive.

If you have to collect your child from school early, for a dental appointment for instance, please report to the school office and sign your child out.

In order to ensure your child is safe we lock the doors shortly after 9.00 a.m. if you arrive late to school please enter by the Main Entrance.

SCHOOL DRESS

All children are expected to wear school dress

Our school colours are red, white and grey.  School tee shirts, coats and sweatshirts can be ordered from the school office.

We ask that your child is reasonably dressed for work at school. Please do not send your child to school in jeans or sports / football clothes..PLEASE PUT NAMES ON ALL CLOTHES AND SHOES.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE

We try to provide a friendly caring environment for the children within which high standards of work and behaviour are expected.  Emphasis is placed on the individual’s growing self discipline and the development of positive attitudes rather than on negative restrictions.  The Good Behaviour Policy and anti - bullying policy is in the school office.Top of

SCHOOL GOVERNORS

The Chair of Governors for this year is Mr.V. McKeown and the Vice-Chair is Mrs. H.Tweddle.  Mrs. K. Coggin is the delegated governor with responsibility for monitoring Special Educational Needs issues.

Presently the Parent-governors are:

  • Mrs. K. Coggin
  • Mr. J. Leitch
  • Mrs. J. Storey
  • Mr.A.Johnson
  • Mr.R.Nicholson

Governors serve on the Governing Body for a period of four years.

Each year the Governing Body used to circulate an Annual Report to Parents. This has now been replaced by the school profile. This can be accessed on the internet at http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk/8112715/school-profile

Governors are always keen to know if Parents have any concerns that they wish to express and so the Chair or Parent-governors will welcome any contributions about issues that you care to discuss

COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE

If you have any reason to complain about anything please contact the Headteacher.  We are always willing to talk over any problems. Please ring or call in the office for an appointment, as the Head has a teaching commitment and will not necessarily be available to see you immediately.  If there is a serious complaint which cannot wait, please make this known to Mrs Wilson.

If after seeing the Head, you are still not satisfied, contact a member of the Governing Body. Please do not contact them before discussing a problem in school.

ADULTS WITH PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Both parents of a child are entitled to information from school regarding their child’s progress or to attend school events which parents are invited to.

We are obliged to send information about open evenings etc. to both parents. We would ask therefore, to be kept informed about any changes of address for either parent.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

The school’s curriculum is designed to cater for children’s individual needs as far as possible whatever their abilities or handicaps. We have a separate Special Needs Policy.

CHILD PROTECTION

Parents need to be aware that in the event of a member of staff suspecting that a pupil may have been deliberately harmed or neglected by his or her parents or carers,

the Headteacher has a duty to inform the local Social Services Team Manager.

If the Team Manager shares the school’s concern, he or she will contact the Police to agree the best way of carrying out an investigation.

The decision about when and how the child’s parents or carers are informed of any investigation is made by Social Services and the Police, and not by the school.

These procedures, which take account of guidance issued by Central Government, are described in detail in the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Child Protection Committee’s Guidelines and Procedures, a copy of which you are welcome to look at in school.Top of
page

We feel sure you will realise that these safeguards are necessary to ensure the welfare of all children, and that referrals have to be made in all cases where harm to a child is suspected.

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

If your child is ill and needs to be kept away from school please ring the Office or send a note explaining why your child was away.

We have to keep a record of absences and if we do not have a message from a parent we have to mark your child down as having unauthorised absences.

It is important that parents understand that only the school can authorise absences. Absences not authorised by the Head have to be logged as unauthorised.

No holidays for Y6 children will be authorised during annual test week

If you have a choice we would ask you not to take your child away on holiday during term time. WE NEED TO MAKE YOU AWARE THAT WE CAN ONLY AUTHORISE 10 SCHOOL DAYS IN A SCHOOL YEAR FOR FAMILY HOLIDAYS. There are holiday forms available in the office that need to be completed. Two weeks absence can make a big difference to a small child, particularly when the child is missing new work. It is not always possible to repeat work for one child.

The rates of Absence during  2006/2007 were

Total Number of Registered Pupils

160

Attendance

94.4%

Percentage of Authorised Absence

ILLNESS

If your child becomes ill at school we will telephone you or your named emergency contact and ask you to take your child home.

If your child has an accident at school first aid will be given. If we feel the injury requires medical attention you will be contacted.

If your child cannot attend school please telephone school and send a note stating the reason for the absence.

Please keep your child at home if they are suffering from any infectious disease or if they have sickness or diarrhoea.

Please inform us if your child has asthma or any other condition which we should be aware of.  We need to know what to do in case of an emergency.

MEDICINES IN SCHOOL

If your child needs medicine I would ask you to consider whether or not they should be in school.  ONLY MEDICINES PRESCRIBED BY THE DOCTOR WILL BE ADMINISTERED. In the first instance they should be handed in to the office.

There is a consent form to fill in if you wish us to administer medicine to your child.  Please call at the school office.

No medicine or tablets should be kept in a child's bag.  Medicine should be clearly labelled with the child's name and should have clear instructions as to the dose.

Please remember that school staff have no medical qualifications and if there is any doubt Top of
pageabout medication, it will not be administered.

SCHOOL DINNERS

Dinners are available for children who are in school full time. They are cooked at Sproatley Primary School and transported here. Dinners cost £1-55p.  Meals should be ordered and paid for on Monday morning. Would parents please send a note with Infant children stating clearly whether your child is staying at school for lunch and whether they require a cooked meal.

You may be entitled for free dinners.  Please call at the Office for a form.

Children can bring their own packed lunch. Please do not send drinks in cans or glass bottles.

Children can go home for lunch providing they are collected by an adult.

FREE FRUIT FOR SCHOOLS

We are part of the Free Fruit for Schools scheme. All Key Stage 1 children are given a piece of fruit every day.

MILK

Early admission children have a drink of milk each day.  Please inform us if your child cannot drink milk.

PLAY TIMES

Your child will have 15 minutes playtime during the morning and afternoon sessions.  Early admission children may play in the separate area outside the infant unit at the beginning of the school year.Top of
page

Please do not send your child to school with sweets. You are welcome to send fruit or vegetables to eat at break time.

INDOOR SHOES

Please provide your child with a change of shoes for indoors.  Many of our areas are carpeted and soon get dirty or wet in bad weather.

P.E. / GAMES

Your child will need suitable clothes and footwear for P.E.  Please provide your child with a pair of shorts and a tee shirt, or a leotard, and sandshoes. They will need a SMALL bag to keep them in, which will hang on their peg in the cloakroom.

Please name all clothing including shoes, sandshoes, wellingtons and all outer and under clothes. Name tapes can be ordered from the school. Please enquire at the office.

All Junior children take part in outdoor games and will need suitable clothes and footwear.

JEWELLERY

We would ask that children do not wear jewellery for school. Items can easily be lost or broken.

Children with pierced ears must either remove their earrings for PE and Games or put tape/micropore over them to comply with Health and Safety guidelines.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The school is not affiliated with a particular religious denomination.

RE teaching follows the County’s Agreed Syllabus 1993. It is non denominational and the daily collective act of worship is broadly Christian in character.

We will make arrangements for parents to exercise their statutory right to withdraw their children from religious education.

READING BOOKS

Children will bring home a book bag with a reading book and a small notebook inside. The reading book is for you to read and talk about with your child.  Please write in and initial the notebook to tell us that you have read the book with your child and that it is ready to be changed.

As your child progresses we would ask you to find time to listen to your child read at home. This is very important to your child’s reading development.

HOMEWORK

All children are expected to read at home, learn tables, facts, and spellings, appropriate to their age. Other work is undertaken connected with a particular topic.

Junior children receive more homework as they progress through the school. Our full Homework policy is available in the School office.

MUSIC TUITION

All children follow the National Curriculum. Some children if they have the aptitude can learn to play the violin, the cello or the guitar. There is a  termly charge of £30 to cover the cost of lessons.

We can also offer tuition on Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Cornet and Trumpet for children who would like to play these instruments.  We hope all musicians will join our thriving Community Orchestra which includes children from four local schools.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Netball  for Y3, Y4, Y5 after school on Tuesdays

Tag Rugby Monday nights after school for Y5/6

Football club for Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6 runs on Mondays or Tuesdays after school

Guitar /Choir club on Thursday lunchtime.

Community Orchestra runs on Monday nights after school

Year 6 / 7 Cross phase Basketball Club runs on Wednesdays after school

We would welcome any parents with hobbies or interests to contact us if you have time to spare to run a club at school.

CHARGING FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

On occasions we ask parents for contributions for school outings or music tuition. Parents who have difficulties paying contributions, should call and discuss the matter, in confidence, with the Head.  The full Charging and Remissions Policy is available for inspection in school.

PARENT HELPERS

We encourage parents to help in school if they are able.

We believe in the partnership between school and home and want parents to be involved in all aspects of their children's school life.

If you could offer to spend some dedicated time in classes please call into the office. You will need to fill in a CRB form (police check).

Parents help with various activities throughout the year, including swimming, school visits and school events.

FRIENDS OF BURSTWICK SCHOOL (FOBS)

We have an active parent/teacher organisation who organise events throughout the year and are a great asset to the school for their support and the extra money they raise to supplement our school budget.  Increasingly they have included Social Nights in their programme.

(Whilst your child is in school you are a member of the Association and we hope that you will attend meetings, make your opinions known and help whenever possible.)

SECONDARY SCHOOL

Most of our children go to South Holderness School when they leave us at 11 years. We have close liaison with the staff to ensure our children make the big step to secondary school with confidence.

There is a sports Centre at the School which we use for our Swimming Programme, and which offer a variety of activities for adults and children out of school hours.

Primary Secondary links

We have built up some very important links with our feeder secondary school, South Holderness School.

Year 4 and year 7 (South Holderness School) have worked together on a textile project and  Y1 and Y9 (South Holderness School) have been involved in a Geography project in addition to some Year 6/Year 7 cross phrase activities.

AND FINALLY

We actively encourage all new parents to become involved in the life of the school.  So why don’t you (if you have the time)

  • · Offer your help to a class teacher
  • · Come to the next Friends of Burstwick School (FoBS) meeting
  • · Offer your help to the Christmas Fair Committee
  • · Think about becoming a Parent Governor.
